"Planetary overheating is really just the most geophysical symptom of extractive colonial capitalism – 'billionairism' – a system designed to pump wealth from the poor to the rich, creating billionaires, the healthcare crisis, the housing crisis, genocide, hierarchies like racism and patriarchy, and a great deal of suffering."

~ Peter Kalmus

The Guardian · Meta never cared about factchecking. What it wants is friction-free oligarchyBy Joan Donovan

The skies of Chile’s Atacama Desert, renowned as the darkest and clearest of the world, are now at risk from an industrial megaproject.

Electricity company AES Andes proposed to locate a large-scale industrial complex just a few kilometres away from our Paranal Observatory. If constructed, the resulting dust emissions, increased atmospheric turbulence, and especially light #pollution, would irreparably impact the capabilities for astronomical observation.

We urge the involved parties, specifically AES Andes, to work with the Government of #Chile to relocate this megaproject to a zone compatible with industrial development without jeopardising the skies of Paranal.

Hello! We never did a proper #introduction.

We're an #OpenSource and #NonProfit #research, #design and #development organisation, based in #Cornwall in the UK. We actually care about stuff, and mostly work on #environment, #climate and #social projects.

We're all a bit #generalist, and many of our projects are rooted in rural issues, rather than being city-centric. Always open to collabs.

UK drops plan to phase out gas boilers by 2035

The UK government has abandoned its proposal to ban the sale of new gas boilers by 2035, raising concerns about the country's ability to meet key climate goals amid growing criticism from environmental advocates

"Don't push your lifestyle onto others."

Vegans, cyclists, and comparable always get responses like this for whatever actions they do.

But shouldn't we make the task of not pushing lifestyles on those who push lifestyles that actively harm others and the planet?

"Don't push your carnist lifestyle onto others."

"Don't push your pro-car lifestyle onto others."

"Don't push your webstore haul lifestyle onto others."

Two things happened.

Capitalism was invented 400 years ago by England and the Netherlands.

Then, about 100 years ago, the incredible energy bounty — and tremendous profit — of burning fossil fuels was realized.

If those two things had been kept separate, if they had never interacted, our world might look a lot different today.

But, as we know, they were not kept separate. No chance of that. Instead, capitalism was allowed to fully exploit the burning of fossil fuels in order to make massive profits, trillions and trillions of dollars.

And it still continues — even though scientists have been warning for more than 50 years that we are on the road to ruin.

Look at the charts below. An exponential curve. Yet we're constantly being told to calm down, that everything is fine, there's no need to panic. 🤬

Yes, we all know the climate is changing. We all know it’s getting hotter every year.

But why should that affect Business As Usual? If there’s more money to be made, why stop now?

The UN’s climate and weather agency, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), will publish official temperature figures for the year in January. The organisation said the past year was set to be the warmest on record, capping a decade of unprecedented heat fueled by human activities and driving increasing weather extremes, while greenhouse gas levels continued to reach new highs, locking in more heat for the future.

Delivering his annual new year message, the UN secretary general, António Guterres said: “I can officially report that we have just endured a decade of deadly heat. The top 10 hottest years on record have happened in the last 10 years, including 2024. This is climate breakdown, in real time. We must exit this road to ruin and we have no time to lose.”

The WMO secretary general, Celeste Saulo, said: “This year we saw record-breaking rainfall and flooding events and terrible loss of life in so many countries, causing heartbreak to communities on every continent. Intense heat scorched dozens of countries, with temperatures topping 50C on a number of occasions. Wildfires wreaked devastation.”

The whole idea of "ultra-processed foods" as a uniquely bad thing (and the NOVA system of classification) is a con perpetrated by the meat industry.
They group beefsteak with raw carrots, and tofu with Twinkies, in their statistical categories, and use that to say that beef is good for you and tofu is bad. Just egregiously bad data collection and interpretation, the only explanation for why it's happening is financial incentives. Probably not a coincidence that this "science" is coming out of Brazil, home of the planet-destroying beef industry...

While Montpellier may be the largest city to introduce free public transport it’s far from the first place in Europe to do so.

Tallinn in Estonia paved the way back in 2013. Since then, multiple other cities & towns have set up their own schemes, while two European countries got in on the act. Luxembourg made all public transport free in 2020, and Malta followed its lead in 2022
